Lead Sampling Program

The City of Morden is offering free testing for lead in drinking water. We will be selecting homes in residential areas that are more likely to have lead-containing materials in their plumbing.

If you are interested in having the drinking water in your home tested for lead, please phone or email the City of Morden by July 8, 2022, using the contact information below. Participants will be selected on a first come first serve basis. The City of Morden will advise you on how the water samples will be collected from your home while respecting the Provincial Health Guidelines for COVID-19.

Lead exposure can have effects on everyone, but children and unborn children are the most sensitive to lead exposure. Health Canada Guidelines state that lead concentration in drinking water should not exceed 0.005 mg/L.

Water entering the distribution system from the City of Morden Water Treatment Plant meets the lead limit guidelines. Lead can enter the water from lead-containing materials in the plumbing in homes. Lead services lines were largely phased out by 1975 and lead-containing fixtures and solder by 1990. Some newer homes may have plumbing fixtures containing lead. Testing the drinking water in your home will help the City of Morden assess whether lead is present in residential drinking water and will inform Manitoba Health and the City on the best course of action to take if it exceeds guidelines.

You will receive the results of your drinking water test. If your drinking water has elevated lead levels, the City of Morden will provide you with advice on how you can reduce lead in your drinking water.
